The mining complex of São Domingos was installed during the 19th century for the exploration of copper pyrite, which was explored in both the Roman and Pre-Roman periods. The mines closed in 1967 leaving behind several challenges for the area but also many stories to tell. Over the years the environmental requalification began and now there is a route that leads to many heritage spots.

The village of São Domingos is the location of the mining site and from there you may walk (or even cycle) along the industrial complex, extending to the areas of Moitinha and Achada do Gamo, with spectacular landscapes all around. You may also walk around the mining village and relax near the water reservoirs or on the beach of Tapada Grande. Environmental requalification has provided a lush habitat for many bird species that are using the site for nesting and feeding, representing a sign of resilience.
