Off the Road - Into the Wildscapes [Stage 6]
This is the last stage of this cycling adventure through the immense territory of Portugal Wildscapes. You will say goodbye to the Guadiana and return to the endless plains of Alentejo.
You may visit the chapel of Our Lady of Aracélis, the “altar of heaven”, where you can find an excellent view of the landscape below. This chapel is an important place of devotion and pilgrimage.
Before returning to Castro Verde there is another epic viewpoint to visit. At the top of São Pedro das Cabeças, a small chapel celebrates the historical site of the mythical battle of Ourique of 1139. It is said that the first king of Portugal D. Afonso Henriques, guided by divine forces, won a battle against five Moorish kings and laid the foundation for what would later become Portugal.
Legends aside, your journey is coming to an end. After all, as we say in Alentejo, everything “it’s just there”, so enjoy these last moments along the paths of Portugal Wildscapes!

Tips and hints
In the old hot springs of Água Santa da Morena it is still possible to have a taste of the sulphurous thermal water that springs there and for so many years was sought for relief of local people.
As an alternative to the suggested stage, you can for example stay overnight in São Marcos da Ataboeira.
