Castle of Coruche
Castle · Alentejo · 46 m
On the hill overlooking the village, in the place where a castle once stood, which was the scene of frequent skirmishes between Muslims and Christians, at the time of the Reconquista, stands the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Castelo.
According to oral tradition, it was founded by D. Afonso Henriques, keeping a portrait of this king. Over the years, it has undergone several restorations, presenting itself today, fresh and attractive, with its small temple and tower bordered in blue iron, typical of the region. From the viewpoint you can see a stunning panorama over the floodplain, in a plain as far as the eye can see, where the Sorraia fields unfold in shades of green and gold to the horizon.
